HERE'S THE STORY:
My Father, Bill, is a Hospice Volunteer and on occasion has a patient who, when close to death, needs so much care that the caregiver just can't handle it. When that happens the patient goes to a Hospice Care Center for the last few days of their life. They are great places.
Presently, there is no care center in Brunswick County, North Carolina, which means the caregiver needs to travel an hour or more each way to spend time with their loved one when they are dying. Most of the time, the care giver is elderly and the long trip is torturous - they don't want their loved one to leave their home, but they just can't care for them. Moving the patient from the home is traumatic and then when the caregiver faces a 2 to 3 hour roundtrip to visit it is too much. When you witness this, it is heartbreaking.
Lower Cape Fear Hospice Foundation is raising funds through the Closer to Home Capital Campaign to build a care center that will be convenient for their patients and their loved ones residing in Brunswick County, because no one should have to travel more than two hours to accompany their loved one on their final journey.
