BENEFITING: J/P Haitian Relief Organization
THE STORY:
The mission at J/P Haitian Relief Organization (J/P HRO) is simple: To save lives and bring sustainable programs to the Haitian people quickly and effectively. Since the devastating earthquake of January 12, 2010, J/P HRO has been on the ground, working with some of the most vulnerable populations to not only recover from the earthquake but to build a brighter future for themselves, their families and their country.
J/P HRO is manages Pétion-Ville Camp, a tent city build on a golf course. Immediately after the January 2010 disaster it became a temporary home to nearly 60,000 people. Today, more than 80 percent have returned to homes and 8,000 displaced people remain. J/P HRO has committed to assist these families as they transition from camp life to safe communities.
Our staff, which is 95 percent Haitian and 350 strong, is working every day to provide education, health and community development, and economic opportunities.Today, J/P HRO programs focus on the neighborhood adjoining the camp, Delmas 32, and supporting the residents as they rebuild their lives.
Taking a geographically focused and integrated approach to community regeneration, J/P HRO programs empower the residents of Delmas 32 to revitalize their neighborhood. Together, we aim to demonstrate that something fundamentally different can come from a slum in the center of one of the world’s poorest cities: sustainable and prosperous communities. We work with the support of and in collaboration with local and national government leaders, community-based organizations, other international NGO’s, UN agencies, donors—and-most importantly—the community members themselves.
J/P HRO works to make living conditions in the camp better like providing medical care, schooling for children and community programs. But J/P HRO’s main objective is to help these people get home. For the Haitian people home is dignity, jobs, education, good health, family, creativity and a better future for their country.
J/P HRO is on the ground in Haiti clearing rubble, fixing earthquake damaged homes, helping families move out of tents one a time, building jobs programs, revitalizing schools, developing public health programs and working side by side with the Haitian people and the Haitian government to solve the nation's problems.
On average, it costs about $1300* per person to make the journey from camp to home. This covers the cost of rebuilding homes and revitalizing schools, clinics and other community services; as well the cost of rubble and debris removal. Millions of square feet of rubble still clog the streets of Port-au-Prince, a key obstacle to helping people home.
