When I was a little girl, I learned about the importance of giving back and helping others from my grandfather. I have tried to continue that practice throughout my adult life, and in 1986 I started my own foundation.
Over the last two decades, The Streisand Foundation has awarded grants to more than 700 organizations working on the following issues: the environment, women’s health, civic engagement, civil rights, and education. We still have a long way to go before these issues are solved and through The Streisand Foundation, I will continue my commitment to the work being done.
Within the last few years, I have become involved in a new initiative, one that I am passionate about both personally and philanthropically: women’s heart disease.
I was shocked to learn these facts:
- Heart disease is the number one killer of women today;
- Five hundred thousand women in the United States die from heart disease each year--more than all cancers combined;
- Today, more women are dying of heart disease than men; and
- Despite the fact that heart attacks present differently in men versus women, we still treat women based on research done on men.
This is not just a man’s disease anymore, this is now a woman’s health epidemic. For this reason, I created the Barbra Streisand Women’s Cardiovascular Research and Education Program at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. The research being done at the Women's Heart Center at Cedars-Sinai is groundbreaking because it changes how women are diagnosed, treated and educated about heart disease. We are fifty years behind on the research, but we now have an opportunity to close the gap and save the lives of countless women.
