Friends of the Hospital for Sick Children wrote -

We are raising money for a groundbreaking laser program at Sick Kids Hospital that involves the Candela Vbeam Perfecta 595nm Pulsed Dye Laser.  This could be life changing for little patients who are left with permanent scars after the horror of being burned.  Laser therapy has been used world-wide and now SickKids will be incorporating this treatment into their scar management regime. 

Until recently, families have relied on massage, medications, pressure garments that have to be worn for up to 23 hours/day in order for hypertrophic burn scars to become more manageable for patients and their families. Many pediatric patients are left with tough, red, firm, itchy scars that persist for up to 2 years. Visible scars are a constant reminder to patients and their families of the traumatic injuries their child has experienced. 

The use of laser therapy has dramatically reduced the itching experienced as the scars form as well as minimizing the redness, toughness and firmness of the scars. One can imagine the positive impact this has on quality of life as the aesthetic appearance of the scars are minimized, the children play, sleep and eat better as a result of not experiencing chronic itch and the reminder of their injury. Amazingly, the appearance of these scars fade with the help of this ground-breaking treatment.
