The Jed Foundation's mission is to promote emotional health and prevent suicide among college and university students.
For most of us, our college years represent a time of exploration and learning, of growth and anticipation, of independence and confidence. They represent the transition to adulthood, to a career, a life of one’s own, to a future of possibility.
But for many of us, these years can also be a time of isolation, of social anxiety and intense peer pressure. We see the side effects of these forces in the headlines: a death from binge drinking, a drug overdose, a university shooting, a suicide. These tragedies affect entire communities—students, faculty, coaches, professors, and parents alike. Even more jarring is that these tragedies are avoidable. They can be prevented.
The conditions that give rise to these tragedies are complex and their warning signs are often subtle. Preventing these tragedies takes more than just posters, more than a well- meaning dean or faculty member, more than just good intentions.
This is why The Jed Foundation takes a comprehensive approach to prevent high-risk behavior among students. We help colleges assess and improve their emotional health efforts and inform the student conversation through partnerships and campaigns to build the foundation for an emotionally healthy environment—the kind of environment that is characterized by caring and connectedness, that celebrates and protects every student life.
