CROWDRISE FEATURED : Jul 14, 2010
EIN: 03-0496901
BASED: Amherst, MA, United States

CHARITY WEBSITE: Reader to Reader
WHAT WE DO:

Over $40 million dollars worth of books and computers donated and counting! Thank you, donors!

Fact: 60% of underprivileged children do not own a single book.
Fact: Low literacy costs $73 million per year in direct health care costs.
Fact: When the state of Arizona calculates how many prison beds they need, they factor in the number of 4th graders who are behind in their reading skills.

This makes a well-stocked school library a critical resource hub that is a necessity, not a luxury.

Reader To Reader is a 501(c)(3) public charity dedicated to the promotion of literacy in under-resourced communities worldwide. Our key interests are improving basic literacy, increasing retention and graduation rates both in high school and in college, fostering a love of reading, and bringing books into the institutions that need them the most.

Our mission is to support communities and individuals who are impoverished, neglected, or disempowered, with special focus on the Navajo Nation, rural areas including Maine and Mississippi, and our local Massachusetts schools.

Other projects:
ONLINE MENTORING- One-on-one reading with a college mentor gets kids engaged with reading in new and exciting ways.

MANY PATHS- College advising and prep website/mentorship for low-income, minority and/or first-generation students to get them into college and graduated!

ATHENA INTERACTIVE LITERACY PROJECT- Teen moms from Holyoke, MA come to our offices for workshops in spoken word poetry, teaching their kids to read, interactive literacy and healthy cooking.

SPRINGBOARD PROGRAM- Student-designed, student-led literacy projects are supported by Reader to Reader for maximum impact on both student and community. Students are challenged to provide educational resources in innovative, valuable and wanted ways. Community involvement is high, and projects are made sustainable by community empowerment and ownership.

Happy May! It’s finally spring, and kids will soon be running out the school doors into sweet summer freedom. But over 19,000,000 children across the country do not own a single book. Can you imagine a summer without even a little fun reading?

Please take a minute to check out Reader to Reader's newest fundraiser with Twive & Receive: http://twive.razoo.com/story/Amherst-Loves-Books Your donation on June 14th could help us win a share of $30,000! Now more than ever, the smallest donation can have a huge impact. You can sign up for a reminder email on our page, or if you just can't wait to get books in the hands of children, donate now. Thank you for your support!

Happy April, CR friend!
Reader to Reader is auctioning off some great artwork to raise funds for our many international programs, thanks to our friends at the ART4GOOD Foundation. If you like art, books, or education, stop by and take a look at the 35 beautiful pieces available! http://bit.ly/HjFtMO
You get a beautiful piece of art, and RTR can:
-provide special education programs for children in the Dominican Republic;
-teach women to read in Nigeria;
-keep abandoned children in childhood through reading and improve theater in rural China;
-sponsor Haitian kids to finish school;
-continue to grow our public library in a coffee-farming Costa Rican village;
AND support many other programs that do wonderful work in India, Mexico, Nicaragua, Kosovo, Ghana and other countries.
If art isn’t your thing, you can still support our programs by donating or joining our team. Take a look at my projects to see more of what we do.
All the best, and HAPPY READING,
Kat
