Last year I gave up my 25th birthday, asking for donations to the Love is Louder project instead of gifts. With your help and generosity, I was able to raise $1350.
This year I am at it again for charity:water. I'd love to exceed last year's amount by $50, a total of $1400. Please help me save lives!
-------
Most of us have never really been thirsty. We've never had to leave our houses and walk five miles to fetch water. We simply turn on the tap, and water comes out. Clean. Yet there are 800 million people on the planet who don't have clean water.
Every year, millions of people contract deadly diseases from contaminated water. 30,000 people will die this week alone. The lucky ones won’t, but still have to face incredible dangers walking hours each day to get dirty water for their families.
Women in sub-Saharan Africa spend more time collecting dirty water for their family than any other activity they do in a day. About every 19 seconds those same mothers lose one of her children to a water related illness. And each day almost a billion people are living this way.
A billion people; 1 in 9 people in our world doesn’t have access to the most basic of human needs. Something we can’t imagine going 12 hours without.
Put yourself in their shoes. Follow them on their daily journey. Carry 80 pounds of water in yellow fuel cans. Dig with their children in sand for water. Line up at a well and wait eight hours for a turn.
Now, make a decision to help. For about $20 a person, we can help millions.
Celebrate my 26th Birthday by donating to this important cause. Help save lives. Help put smiles on strangers' faces. And always remember how incredibly lucky you are.
