Every year, thousands of kids start school with no books in the classroom, poor school libraries, and no books of their own. Reader to Reader gives out hundreds of thousands of books to under-resourced schools, libraries and children, but the need is especially strong at the start of the school year. They need YOUR help to get books into the hands of children who truly need the power of reading in their lives.

The summer is here, and school is out! But even though students are enjoying the sun, we're still working hard to bring resources to low-income schools, libraries, and communities. Reader to Reader's work doesn't stop with the school year, and becomes even more important. More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth comes from unequal access to summer learning opportunities. Low-income kids can lose up to two months of reading ability over the summer, while middle-class children make slight gains. Now more than ever it is essential that books are available to low-income children. Help us make this possible with your support today.

With all the headlines screaming disaster and heartache, it's easy to get disheartened. Reader to Reader has supported schools damaged by tornadoes, public libraries devastated by flooding, and communities deeply affected by local tragedy. But each day we see examples of how much good is out there. That goodness is not always in the headlines. Sometimes, it's tucked quietly away, but it's there, and is the very reason we do this work--to bring books and other resources to the next generation that so richly deserves them.

Justin graduated from the University of Massachusetts, Amherst with a bachelors degree in Kinesiology with a premedical concentration in 2006 and worked as a personal trainer, financial analyst, mortgage broker and e-commerce marketer for nutritional supplements before joining the United States Marine Corps in 2007. Justin began his military career as an enlisted Marine and quickly rose to the rank of Corporal (E-4) before being selected to attend Officer Candidate School in 2010. Remaining in the field of supply chain management and logistics, Justin has since managed over 130 million dollars in government assets directly and budgets exceeding several million dollars a year. As his final year of military service closes in Justin has moved into a more active role as the marketing/HR director for Green Collar Vets and his blog vividly details his transition for all Veterans to follow. 1greenmarine.wordpress.com
