DAYS TO GO: 117
THE STORY:
On April 15, 2013, Gillian Reny was one of the many innocent bystanders critically injured at the finish line in the Boston Marathon bombings. She was rushed to Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), where doctors and nurses worked heroically to save her life—and both of her legs. In gratitude to BWH, the Reny family established the Gillian Reny Stepping Strong Fund to help future trauma patients like Gillian regain their strength and ability to step strong once again. To date, the fund has raised more than $4.4 million to support trauma innovation and recovery while upholding the Boston Strong spirit that defined the aftermath of the marathon tragedy.
Although trauma accounts for 41 million Emergency Department visits a year and is the leading cause of death for people ages 1-44 in the United States, funding to improve outcomes is scarce. The 2016 Stepping Strong Marathon Team will advance the Renys’ commitment of turning tragedy into hope by raising funds to honor the medical heroes who saved Gillian and so many others that fateful day.
Thank you for supporting this extraordinary group of runners. Together, we can transform trauma research and care for future patients with traumatic, athletic, military, or disease-related limb injuries. Learn more about the Stepping Strong Fund.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) Stepping Strong Marathon Team is proud to participate in the Boston Athletic Association’s Official Charity Program.
